Missing SeaTac man found living out of state The King County sheriff's office says a man who had been reported as missing nearly two years ago has been found alive and well, living in another state. The Associated Press SEATTLE — The King County sheriff's office says a man who had been reported as missing nearly two years ago has been found alive and well, living in another state. Detectives determined last week Nicholas Francisco had changed his name. The 28-year-old was supposedly heading home to bake cookies with his children when he dropped out of sight Feb. 13, 2008, after leaving work. His car was found a few days later, abandoned in Federal Way. An extensive investigation by the sheriff's office turned up no sign of a crime. His wife filed for divorce in May, citing "willful abandonment."

This isn't exactly an orthodox question for this group, but I figured that if anyone had the answer to it that it would be you guys, so I will ask it.
The question is this: is a degree in Philosophy worth getting? Additional questions: what types of jobs could one get with a graduate degree in Philosophy? If you have an M.A. in another field, could you in theory skip the B.A. in Philosophy and get accepted into a graduate program instead?
I'm thinking about maybe going into Philosophy a couple years after I get my M.A. in May, depending on various factors.

...I mean, other than semi-tolerable movies?
Comics legend LEN WEIN (creator of Wolverine, Swamp Thing and editor of the original Watchmen comic series) will be appearing at the Seattle Center Comic Con today from 10am till 5pm today, Sunday November 8th. Admission is $5, $5 with a can of food for Northwest Harvest, Children 5 and under are free, blah blah spammity-blah...
If you have to choose just one geeky thing to do today (And there are a few Geeky things to do in the Greater Seattle Area today), I strongly suggest THIS EVENT over any of the others. Why?
CHEAP! $5 to get in! Dealers motivated to unload some product so they don't have to lug it back home in the rain!
INTIMATE! When else are you going to have a chance to meet WOLVERINE'S DADDY at a convention with notoriously low attendance? As a dealer at these shows over the past few years, I don't think I've ever seen more than 200 people come through the doors over the course of the entire day. It's more like a local Farmer's Market r Swap Meet than a comic book convention!
Hope to see you there!

In his Social Contract (translated, obviously) there's a footnote which reads:
"For the will to be general, it does not always have to be unanimous; but all the votes must be counted. Any formal exclusion destroys its universality." (Book 2, ch. 2)
Now, I understand the terms, but what does it mean for a formal exclusion to destroy the universality of the general will?

Are there any special trash rules related to getting rid of a dead garbage disposal? I've been looking all over the Seattle Public Utilities site (here, if you're in need too), but it seems to fall into a grey area. It's not a washer or dryer, but it's not a toaster either. I can't tell if it could be recycled or not.
I'm planning on calling Monday, but I'd like to get this stinky, drippy, dead appliance out of my kitchen as soon as I can. I'm hoping someone out there has dealt with this very situation and has a quick answer.
Thanks!

Average local yelp restaurant review:
So my sisters boyfriend was in town and we decided to go out and have a good time because he is super awesome and she loves him so much. We went all around Seattle and saw the sights, and we splashed in the fountain because she had totally never done that before but we totally did today and it was fun. Soon we got hungry and we went to this local restaurant known for its great food apparently. We had to wait in LINE because the bitchy hostess said something about reservations and a weekend. After we finally got seated after FOREVER because all these people who had called ahead kept showing up, I was TOTALLY BUMMED that they didn't have anything that was vegan, gluten free, fat free, or bike friendly. What kind of place is this? I mean, everyone said it was totally awesome, but when we got there all they had was this fancy menu stuff that I couldn't read, and I totally don't even know what bechemel is anyway. IDK it just seemed not as great as everyone said it was. Two stars.

I'm looking for recommendations for the best (be it by price or by selection or by your own arbitrary criterion) ethnic and specialty grocers. I am specifically seeking: -mexican/south american (bonus for anywhere that makes fresh corn tortillas) -persian (specifically seeking sumac and pomegranate syrup here) -indian -kosher (somewhere with a decent selection of israeli imports would be nice, bonus points for a good selection of kosher/israeli wines) -cheesemonger (preference for somewhere that will cut-to-order by weight, rather than having pre-cut and cello-wrapped cheese)
While proximity to where I'm living is nice (which would be South Everett), I'm willing to make a trip for good quality and well priced foodstuffs.

Dear Greenwood Arsonist,
We get it already. You like to set stuff on fire and watch it burn. Spiffy. Different strokes for different folks and all that.
How about this: instead of setting places where people are trying to conduct business on fire, if you're going to torch something else, how about the old McDonalds on Greenwood Ave. which has been sitting vacant for the last couple years? You could burn it down and do the community a favor by ridding us of the eyesore. Besides, I bet there's all sorts of grease and flammable stuff in there which would catch pretty well.
You could even stay inside and watch to see first hand the sort of effect your fires have on buildings from that side. Sounds exciting, doesn't it. Why not give it a try? After all, I think you're the one person I could tell to DIAF and actually fucking mean it literally.
kthxbye

So, my mother is kind of flipping out. She needs tile wax to use in our MIL apartment. We found 2 stores that carry it but none are open on weekends and the new tenant is moving in tomorrow. Anyone know where I can find this? Proximity to North Seattle/Greenwood would be a plus, but I suppose I don't have a choice as far as distance. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Ok, we are all sad that a Seattle police officer was shot. We are sad for his family, especially. That being said, what was the use of that huge event yesterday? The cost of that event could have fed, housed, and/or provided health care for quite a number of the citizens here in Seattle that are suffering from the effects of our poor economy. Wouldn't caring for the citizens he protected be more honoring than that spectacle?

My roommate is at Harborview with a friend who's about to go into surgery, and he just texted me that the suspect from the police shooting on Halloween was apprehended by the police and shot and is at Harborview now, so the whole hospital is on lockdown!!! Apparently they acted on a tip and went to the guy's house and he drew a gun, so they shot him.

Hello,
My brother is visiting (he's from Florida) and he wants me to take him to a good seafood place. I am vegan so I am unaware of such places in the city. I live in Queen Anne but have a car so anyplace is okay. Downtown is a plus so I can show him stuff down there. What's your favorite?
Thanks

The group that manages the official King County web sites has apparently retired it's longstanding metrokc.gov domain to replace it with kingcounty.gov, which is all well and good. It's a better name, anyway. But what they've done is redirect ALL requests for the old host names to a useless dumping ground instead of just aliasing the old names over the new ones. This is what they have done:

Why is this incredibly stupid and improperly done? Say you have any number of bookmarks or embedded tools (say, mobile applications–iPhone or other) that aim at http://tripplanner.metrokc.gov. That now arbitrarily dumps you on http://www.kingcounty.gov/About/metrokc.aspx rather than forward you to the matching URL on the new host on http://tripplanner.kingcounty.gov/. This applies to all of these in the chart above. Who on Earth approved this stupid way to do it? No one just “retires” and kills off a major domain name, let alone one so old and embedded all over who knows where. All you’ve done is now break all prior internet connectivity to various parts of the county’s web infrastructure.
You also did no favors to search engine optimization and Google searches for the county, either.
If you're in King County please e-mail them at:
http://info.kingcounty.gov/about/contact/default.aspx
To let them know what a bone head move this is.

In case anyone else is wondering what those creepy blue flashes lighting up the entire sky were around 7:30, it appears to be power arcing. There are reports of downed wires just a few blocks from where I am in Magnolia, and I could definitely hear the buzzing sound that page mentions.
Edited to add: apparently power is out on Queen Anne, and the east side of Magnolia.

Washington state voters have approved Referendum 71, keeping a law that expands state benefits for registered same-sex and some senior domestic partners.
The tally late Thursday afternoon saw the vote to approve R-71 leading about 52 percent to 48 percent.
That lead now appears insurmountable. The Secretary of State's Office estimates another 500,000 to 600,000 ballots statewide are still outstanding, with about half expected from King County, where the measure is being approved by slightly more than 2 to 1.
"Voters across the state listened to the personal stories of lesbian and gay families and the challenges they faced and sent a strong message that we want to see all families treated equally under the law in our state," said Anne Levinson, chairwoman of Washington Families Standing Together, which worked for the measure's approval.
But opponents of R-71 were not conceding Thursday afternoon.
Larry Stickney, head of Protect Marriage Washington, which worked for rejection of R-71, said: "There are a lot of votes out there still. We continue to have some hope that the votes cast later will move in our direction."
My comment: Larry Stickney can stick it. Hey Larry? Your side kept saying that rejecting R-71 was what God wanted. You would have thanked God if your side had won. Who are you going to blame, instead? Yeah, calling the hypocrite on the carpet, as it were.
